One of the most hotly debated topics throughout the country right now is whether or not transgender women should be permitted to compete in women’s sports. And based on a recent survey, it seems that support for transgender athletes is falling across the country.

Last month, Gallup conducted a telephone survey of 1,011 U.S. adults. According to that survey, fewer Americans support transgender athletes playing for teams that match their gender identity than two years ago.

According to the survey, 69% of Americans think that transgender athletes should be required to play for teams corresponding to the gender they were assigned at birth, compared to 62% who gave that response in 2021. Likewise, the survey found that 26% of Americans support transgender athletes playing for teams matching their gender identity, which is down from 34% two years ago.

The statistics indicate that support for transgender athletes is falling across the country, and people had plenty to say about that on social media.

Jeff Jones, a senior editor for Gallup, explained that the reason for the change seems to be that people see the issue as a matter of competitive fairness rather than transgender civil rights.

“That’s a surprising finding,” Gallup said according to USA Today. “It definitely looks like most people see it as a fairness issue. Even Democrats are divided, and we see that independents, who are generally supportive of LGBTQ policies, are also opposed overall.”
