Earlier this month, a transgender girl won a popular Irish dancing competition in Dallas, Texas, and one parent was not happy about the decision to allow the girl to compete with other girls.

The girl won first place in the U14 2023 Southern Region Oireachtas to clinch a spot in the Irish Dancing World Championships. And one mother of another competitor expressed her frustration that the transgender girl was allowed to compete in the first place.

“It’s going to make me cry,” the mother told The Daily Signal. “I never thought I was going to have to deal with this. And my heart breaks for my daughter and the other girls that are having to deal with this. They are too young to have to deal with topics that are going on in society, that are adult topics, that they don’t quite comprehend yet.”

The mother explained that the other girls in the competition don’t understand the situation.

“They just look at it as unfair,” the mother said. “And it’s really hard to explain to them what’s going on and why they have to accept it. That’s what society’s making them do. As a mom, I want to be an advocate for my daughter. But at the same time, I have to protect my family.”

The organizers of the competition defended the decision to allow the girl to compete, explaining that the competition follows the policy of An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG), which is considered the oldest and largest competitive Irish dance organization in the world. The CLRG allows transgender competitors.
