Last week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine made a surprising move when he decided to veto a bill that would have banned transgender women and girls from competing in sports in accordance with their gender identity. But it seems like Ohio lawmakers are set to override that veto.

According to a report from Morgan Trau of News 5 Cleveland, Ohio Lawmakers are returning from their winter vacation early in an attempt to override the veto of Ohio House Bill 68, which includes the “Save Women’s Sports Act” which would ban transgender athletes.

It would require 60 percent of the state legislature votes to override the governor’s veto, and Republican state Rep. Josh Williams believes that there are enough supporters of the bill that they have enough votes to override the governor’s veto.

“Yes,” Williams told News 5 Cleveland. “In the best interests of children, you don’t allow them to make life-altering decisions with a child’s brain; they cannot comprehend the long-term ramifications.”

An override would require 59 representatives and 20 senators to support the bill. The bill initially passed with support from 62 representatives and 24 senators.

However, it is possible that some lawmakers will not be able to make the Jan. 10 date for the vote or have since changed their minds.
