Under the current guidelines, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recommends Americans consume no more than two drinks per day for men and no more than one drink per day for women. But those guidelines could be changing drastically, based on some recent comments from Joe Biden official Dr. George Koob.

During a recent interview with The Daily Mail, Koob – the director of the NIAAA under the current Joe Biden administration – revealed that under his leadership, the United States is considering changing its policy to become much more strict. He even suggested moving closer to Canada’s recommendations, which recommend no more than two drinks per week – a drastic change from the current American policy.

“I mean, they’re not going to go up, I’m pretty sure,” Koob said of the guidelines. “So, if [alcohol consumption guidelines] go in any direction, it would be toward Canada.”

Obviously, it would be an absolutely shocking change from the current recommendations, and this led to quite a reaction on social media.

Even if these guidelines are changed, however, it’s unlikely to stop Americans from simply drinking as much as they want, anyway. After all, they are just guidelines, not laws. And Americans are unlikely to slow their drinking as a result of a simple guideline change.

But that probably won’t stop the government from trying.
