Donald Trump continues to throw out the idea that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States, and now it appears he has someone in mind for the position of governor of Canada if that were to happen.
Earlier this month, Donald Trump indicated in a social media post that he believes Canada should join the United States as its 51st state.
He even claimed that “many Canadians” might support the idea.
“No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social earlier this month.
On Christmas Day, Trump once again brought up the idea of the United States annexing Canada and made the insane suggestion that NHL icon Wayne Gretzky could serve as the “Governor of Canada.”
“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,'” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Despite this, it seems that Gretzky showed little enthusiasm for the proposal.
“He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!” Trump added.
Needless to say, this is a rather insane suggestion and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“158 Canadian Forces members (and seven civilians) died in Afghanistan avenging the 9/11 attacks on the US. I don’t find jokes about the ‘Governor of Canada’/51st state amusing. Curious to see when this kind of stupidity gets an appropriate response from our government,” Canadian journalist Glen McGregor wrote.
“Why would you use this day, a day you profess honor’s your savior, to undermine a neighboring country to sow discord?” someone wrote on X.
“Canada has been a friend of the United States for over 200 years. We aided your country on 9/11 and welcomed passengers with open arms. We’ve fought alongside you in wars. We’re a major trading partner. Trump’s comments are an insult to the centuries of friendship and goodwill between the US and Canada,” another Canadian citizen wrote.
“The next four years are going to be exhausting, aren’t they?” someone else said.
“You don’t ‘run for Prime Minister’ in Canada. Trump doesn’t know this, because he isn’t smart,” someone else said.
“America, you elected an idiot to be the 47th President,” another person wrote.
Although the likelihood of Trump and the United States pursuing the annexation of Canada is minimal, it doesn’t seem to be deterring him from continuing to discuss it.
