In case you missed it yesterday, David Backes took a massive hit from Brent Seabrook towards the end of Game 2 in St. Louis. The Blues forward was extremely shaken up by the hit – one that earned Seabrook a game misconduct – and had trouble staying on his feet as a scrum broke around around him.
As pointed out by Dave Lozo of Bleacher Report, it appears that an unidentified Blackhawks player decided to taunt the Blues captain as he stumbled, struggling to to regain his wits. Check out the video above, in which you can hear a ‘Hawks player yell “Wakey wakey, Backes!” before repeating “Wakey wakey!” The taunts come around the :46 second mark.
Pretty awful stuff, especially considering the concussion issues that have plagued the NHL in recent years. Seabrook will, in all likelihood, wind up with a multiple-game suspension as a result of the dangerous hit, but I wouldn’t mind seeing whoever was behind these disgusting taunts wind up getting disciplined as well.
Update: Looks like it was Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith who was behind the taunts:
