The Pittsburgh Steelers were widely expected to be in the market for a new quarterback this offseason based on the lackluster performance play from Kenny Pickett throughout the season that ultimately resulted in Mason Rudolph starting in his place in the playoffs. But in a pretty shocking twist, it sounds like the Steelers aren’t actively involved in pursuing many of the top available quarterbacks on the market.
According to a report from Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, the Steelers are not pursuing Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield.
“The Steelers are not interested in signing Wilson in the likely event he’s released by the Denver Broncos, a source familiar with the coaching staff’s feelings on the quarterback at this stage of his career told The Athletic,” Mike DeFabo wrote for The Athletic on Monday.
“Additionally, Pittsburgh is not among the teams actively working to trade for Fields, league sources told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. Pittsburgh is also not pursuing Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield in free agency, according to league sources.”
If this remains true throughout the offseason, it sounds like there’s a strong chance that Pickett will be the presumptive favorite to be the team’s starting quarterback next season, in a rather shocking twist.
