The Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL modern version of the Bill Belichick, Tom Brady New England dynasty. This season the Chiefs are chasing their fourth Super Bowl title since 2020 and their third consecutive one.
Unfortunately, their chances at a three-peat took a massive downturn during Sunday’s win against the Cleveland Browns. The face of the dynasty, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, got tangled up in a tackle, and the results weren’t good.
Mahomes left the game with an injury and did not return. Now, we know just how severe things are, and they aren’t looking good.
“Per source, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has a high-ankle sprain. He’s probably week-to-week. Chiefs play Saturday against Texans, then the following Wednesday against the Steelers,” reported Pro Football Talk after the game.

This is brutal news, as Sunday began a stretch of three games in 11 days for the Chiefs, meaning Mahomes doesn’t have much time to get healthy between games. With such a tight race for the one seed with the Buffalo Bills going on, who own the tiebreaker over Kansas City, it’s increasingly likely the Chiefs won’t be able to secure the highly coveted first-round bye for the playoffs.
Fans reacted to the brutal injury on social media.
“It would be malpractice to play him Saturday. Him being healthy > locking up the 1 seed,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Netflix is currently getting ready to inject Mahomes with something highly illegal for that Christmas game,” one fan added.
“I figure the folks in kc have some sense, and sense says there’s no way you let 15 play that Wednesday game on Christmas,” another person added.
“Hopefully they can clinch home field quickly and let him get extra rest before the playoffs,” added one Chiefs fan.
It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold for Mahomes.
