Did you channel surf past ESPN, notice the Dallas Mavericks were up a twenty spot on the Golden State Warriors in the first quarter, and think “welp, time for Modern Family“? Nice work, Nostradamus, because you missed out on Steph Curry turning into a cheat code against the Mavs.
The Mavs built up an enormous lead in the first quarter (the score was 24-4 at one point), yet it had that odd feeling of “wait, this isn’t over yet”. And it wasn’t. Little by little, the Warriors began to claw back, draining three after three, atoning for their earlier sins of giving up inexcusably easy buckets to the Mavs. Eventually, it became evident that Curry was just on. And he didn’t let up. For as much damage as Klay Thompson can inflict, Curry is — unbelievably — even more dangerous. He’s a stone cold assassin. He’s the guy you send in when all other options have failed.
As such, Curry drained ten three-point shots on his way to 51 points — the second 50-burger of his career — and a complete and utter annihilation of the Mavs. They couldn’t stop him. He was pulling up from 28 feet out, hitting off-balance floaters over guys a foot taller than him, etc. The Mavs had no answer. Steve Kerr was kinda baffled as well.
