LaVar Ball is going to be in the news as long as his son, Los Angeles Lakers guard Lonzo, is relevant. Whether you like it or not it is a fact. So when the elder Ball is talking about current NBA players, people listen.
This time he called out Philadelphia 76ers first overall pick Markelle Fultz after the newly drafted star spoke to the Washington Post about his shoe deal. Fultz agreed to a deal with Nike back in June but that didn’t stop him from getting a pot shot in on Big Baller Brand.
“I was thinking about it, but then I would make [LaVar Ball] money, though,” said Fultz.
Yowza. The notoriously camera shy LaVar (heavy sarcasm) felt the need to respond to Fultz. He believed that the slight couldn’t just slide on by.
While speaking to ESPN Los Angeles, LaVar said: “Yeah, it’s good for him. I’m not going to sign him to no contract, man. He got to go to the brand and get it like everybody else online.”
It is insane how much more compelling the NBA is than other leagues. Somehow a father to a newly drafted player and a player yet to lace them up are in a war of words. When the filter is off these athletes, the sparks fly.
The Philadelphia 76ers visit the Los Angeles Lakers on November 15.
