This week’s episode of “Adventures With Joey Crawford” features Kevin Durant, whose Thunder team was losing 100-98 when he was awarded two free throws with 27.5 seconds remaining in overtime — the fourth overtime game of an insane first round series against the Memphis Grizzlies. After draining the first attempt, he lined up a second, only to be thwarted by master troll Joey Crawford, who snatched the ball from his hands, and sprinted over to the scorer’s table to berate a scoreboard operator. When Crawford returned, Durant promptly bricked the second free throw, which, by a fraction of a second, turned out to be the last point scored in the game.
However, what appeared to be just another case of “Joey being Joey” was, in fact, a legitimate stoppage of play. A post game report on NBA TV explained that Chesapeake Arena’s scoreboard wasn’t displaying the proper number of team fouls, and that players need to be able to see the current count. Crawford noticed the error in between Durant’s free throws, and acted swiftly to correct the it. Although, while Durant’s miss can’t be entirely blamed on the disruption, Crawford’s actions probably didn’t help.
