China has become the destination for unwanted aging NBA stars who aren’t quite ready to be put out to pasture — hey, if one title is all it takes to get a statue erected in your honor, then it’s totally worth it. In recent months, Tracy McGrady and Gilbert Arenas signed contracts with the Qinqdao Eagles and Shanghai Sharks, respectively, of the Chinese Basketball Association. Perhaps they were inspired by America’s most successful export to the CBA, Stephon Marbury, who led the Beijing Ducks to their first CBA title in Spring 2012.
Meanwhile, Allen Iverson is also cashing in on his remaining ounce of superstar appeal, but rather than link up with a CBA team, he’s chosen to participate in a showboating tour of China (remember what we learned during the lockout: once you sign a CBA contract, it takes an act of God — or Liam Neeson — to get out of it). Thus, his presence on tour comes across as a seemingly desperate reminder to NBA teams that he: A) still exists, and B) is more than available. Here’s The Answer, in his most recent appearance, putting up 37 and 8 against street ballers Rafer “Skip To My Lou” Alston, The Professor, Mr. 720 and Bonecrusher (translation: nobody played any defense). It probably won’t turn many heads stateside, but there’s a certain comfort in knowing Allen Iverson is out there, somewhere, still getting some love.
