Yankees radio announcer John Sterling is known for many things including his popular “It is high, it is far, it is gone” home run call, his quirky signature home run calls for individual players like the inventive “Mark sends a Teix message! You’re on the Mark, Teixeira!” and for miserably failing when it comes to knowing if the ball is a home run or not. On Tuesday night Sterling made what may be his worst gaffe of his career. Alex Rodriguez smacked a ball off Toronto starter R.A. Dickey into the outfield and Sterling was so sure it was a homer that he went right into his customary “It is high, it is far, it is gone” schtick. It was high. It was far. And it was not gone… right into the glove of Blue Jays right fielder Rajai Davis for the putout. Not the best timing for Sterling considering that the Yankees are switching radio stations and his contract ends after this season.
