Not one single non-Yankees fan was rooting for the Bronx Bombers in the 2001 World Series. New York was seeking their fourth straight title and fifth in six seasons. They held a 3-2 series advantage after erasing a 2-0 Arizona lead by winning Games 3-5 at Yankee Stadium. After getting demolished in Game 6, Joe Torre’s club held a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning, courtesy of Roger Clemens’ seven-inning gem.
However, it was in that final inning that the 26-time champions were denied a 27th crown after the Diamondbacks rallied for two runs off future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera. Luis Gonzalez’s bases-loaded RBI single capped a marvelous series and gave the four-year-old franchise their first title.
