Despite the fact that strangulation is quite illegal in Australian Rules Football (and pretty much everywhere else) one player decided to go for it anyways in a recent match.

Brian Lake of Hawthorn FC nearly choked the life out of North Melbourne’s Drew Petrie during a third quarter scuffle on the pitch this past Friday.

As you would imagine, Lake is awaiting what will likely be a lengthy suspension for his actions (which, honestly, kind of looks like attempted murder) but, oddly enough, Petrie also was handed a suspension for his role in the fracas.

Petrie was cited for making unreasonable and unnecessary contact with the face of Lake.

The MRP slapped him with a one-match suspension after grading the incident as negligent, low impact and high contact. (via)

I’m not really sure what sparked the incident but, from what I can gather, that “unreasonable and unnecessary contact with the face” really just looked like a dude trying not to die at the hands of a madman. I guess the league would just prefer he just lie there and resign his life next time.
