Just a few days after Colin Farrell confirmed he would have a starring role in the second season of True Detective, HBO has announced that Vince Vaughn has also been cast in a lead role. Plot details surrounding the upcoming season have also been released.
According to Deadline, the second season will follow three cops and career criminal (played by Vaughn) that must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.
Farrell plays Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a man in danger of losing his criminal empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.
Vaughn is an odd casting choice considering he’s isn’t really known for serious acting roles, but I have faith that he’ll do well and surprise a lot of skeptics. It will be interesting to see who lands the final two cop roles, though it’s rumored that Taylor Kitsch will land one while the other goes to a female lead.
