One week after announcing he would not step down as FIFA President, Sepp Blatter is doing just that. The highly criticized head of international soccer’s governing body resigned his post just four days after being elected to a fifth presidential term.
The move itself isn’t overwhelmingly shocking, but the timing is particularly interesting, as some expected Blatter to remove his name from consideration last week before the election and, if he did not do so, he would ride out a fifth and final term before calling it quits in four years. Now that Blatter has resigned and called an emergency FIFA Congress to vote for a new leader, the speculation is swirling as to who will take over for him.
