South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley is a proud Christian who is not shy about publicly sharing her faith. She prays with her team before games, shares scripture with her players, and thanked Jesus first and foremost after leading her team to the national championship on Sunday afternoon. And Staley also supports transgender athletes.
This weekend, ahead of Sunday night’s national title showdown with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Dawn Staley was asked about her opinion on whether or not transgender women should be allowed to play in women’s basketball. And she made it very clear that she would support transgender women playing in the sport.
“I’m under the opinion of if you are a woman, you should play,” Staley said. “If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports, you should be able to play. That’s my opinion. Do you want me to go deeper? Yes, so now the barnstorm of people are going to flood my timeline and be a distraction to me on one of the biggest days of our game. And I’m okay with that.”
Many people use their Christian faith to justify standing against transgender athletes, but Staley – a proud and open Christian – welcomes them.
