New York Jets Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets signed All-Pro offensive tackle Tyron Smith in the offseason. The Jets didn’t do that without a plan, it seems.

New York plans to rest Smith and rest him often during camp this summer. In The Athletic’s recent article on every team’s concern this season, Smith and his status in practice this year was revealed as part of a larger point on the team’s offensive line.

“Left tackle Tyron Smith will be on a practice plan heavy on rest days — and he’s missed 37 games over the last four years,” Zack Rosenblatt wrote.

The Jets don’t have nearly the amount of hype the team had last season, but they still could be a player this season. It will likely take a full season of Aaron Rodgers to make it happen, and surely, the bar is low after last season. Rodgers famously went down on the team’s first series against the Buffalo Bills in their opener.

New York signed Smith in part to help protect Rodgers. He had a celebrated career with the Dallas Cowboys after the team drafted him in 2011. He spent in his entire career in Dallas, but moved out to the East Coast this offseason.

We’ll see if this plan for Tyron Smith leads to success for the Jets this season. And if they can get their offensive line to be cohesive.
