The UNLV Rebels got some bad news on Wednesday as their starting quarterback announced that he will not be playing the remainder of the season as a result of an apparent NIL dispute.

In a post on social media on Wednesday morning, UNLV starting quarterback Matt Sluka announced that he will not be quitting the team due to promises that he claims were “not upheld after I enrolled.”

“I committed to UNLV based on certain representatives that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled,” Sluka said in a post on social media.

“Despite discussions, it became clear these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

Sluka will not play the remainder of the season, redshirting to preserve this year of eligibility. He will presumably transfer from the program following the season.

This is pretty shocking news considering UNLV is 3-0 and appears to be a possible contender for the College Football Playoff.

Needless to say, the announcement sparked outrage throughout college football.

“UNLV is 3-0, has beaten two P4 programs, and is one of the favorites to make the playoff out of the G5 and their starting QB walks away because of an NIL dispute all while his university is in a battle for their conference future. This sport is broken man,” one fan said on social media.

“NIL ruined the sport,” another fan wrote.

“NIL aside, this kid is giving up a once in a lifetime chance to start for a non-power team to make the playoffs. Which coach is going to recruit a kid that quits after three games next off-season?” another fan said.

“What happened to the sport I loved man,” another fan said.

“Any players that does this clearly does not care about 1. His teammates. 2. His university,” another fan added

UNLV takes on Fresno State this weekend in a game that has major College Football Playoff implications.
