John Elway presided over the Denver Broncos for several years, and the Pro Football Hall of Famer recently explained his biggest regret.
Elway said this week that not drafting quarterback Josh Allen is the one thing he wishes he had done in Denver. The Buffalo Bills superstar is one of the most physically dynamic and impressive quarterbacks in the National Football League, so some remorse for not taking him is perhaps understandable.
“Last year, I played [golf] with him, and I’m wondering, ‘How long is it going to take him to realize that I passed on him and took Bradley Chubb instead?’ And it took him two and a half holes,” said Elway via NFL.com on Pardon My Take. And I loved him. But it just didn’t work out. He was my type. That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days: not taking Josh.”
Granted, there were concerns about Allen coming out of Wyoming. Some felt he fit the model of the “prototypical” big-armed quarterback who had to be developed into something. Naturally, he did exactly that, as Buffalo unlocked his potential in a scintillating way.
For Elway and perhaps other general managers, regret isn’t too big of an issue. Of course, as Colin Cowherd pointed out, there might also not be a need to feel bad because nobody expected Allen to boom the way he did.
