While the Miami Dolphins are moving forward with Tua Tagovailoa as the team’s starting quarterback after giving him a significant contract extension this offseason, it sounds like the team is confident in his backup, too.
During a press conference this week, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel did not hold back his praise for backup quarterback Skylar Thompson as he made it clear that the young quarterback has gotten better this offseason and that the team is confident in him.
“I see a better quarterback now than I did at the beginning of camp, than last year and the year before . . . I see teammates believe in him,” McDaniel said according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “How do you respond to adversity, and how do you make a play when one isn’t there. I wasn’t surprised by what I saw from Skylar. . . . We don’t need an experienced guy. We can go with a guy who has a high ceiling. I think this particular QB room we can go with a young guy, an old guy or just a good guy.”
The team released veteran quarterback Mike White on Sunday, paving the way for Thompson to be the team’s backup quarterback behind Tagovailoa this year.
