Justin Fields caused quite a stir this week when he unfollowed the Chicago Bears on Instagram, igniting speculation that it could signal his imminent departure from the team. But as it turns out, Fields claims that the decision to unfollow the Bears on social media was totally unrelated to the impending decision on his future.
During a recent appearance on the St. Brown Bros Podcast hosted by teammate Equanimeous St. Brown and Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Justin Fields had a pretty simple explanation for why he unfollowed the Chicago Bears on Instagram – he’s going on vacation and didn’t want to see anything football-related on his feed.
In fact, Fields said that he also unfollowed the NFL’s official Instagram account, as well.
“Why do people take social media so serious?” Fields said on the podcast according to NFL.com. “I’m just trying to take a little break. I unfollowed the Bears and the NFL (accounts). I’m just trying not to have football on my timeline … I’m about to go on vacation, I don’t want to see no football.”
It’s worth noting that if Fields didn’t want to see football-related posts on his feed, he could have simply muted the account instead – it certainly would have attracted less attention.
