Josh Smith is a career 63.6% free throw shooter, but for the 2014-15 season (aka, Josh Smith’s Year From Hell), Smith’s average has dipped to a personal season-worst 46.6%. While he’s not the worst free thrower in the NBA this season, it’s the first time he’s ever shot less than 50%. As you can imagine, J-Smoove also has a rich history of air balling free throws, examples of which you can see here, here, here and here. Air ball free throws are always funny, but in a way, what he did in Wednesday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls was even funnier.
On this particular trip to the line, he actually made the first free throw, which is definitely a good thing. The bad news: it was an ugly-ass bank shot. You should never have to call your own free throw. So, what do you do after banking in a free throw? You can either try it again, or recalibrate and make one like a normal NBA player. Unfortunately, Smith overcompensated and barely hit the front of the rim on the second try. But hey, at least it wasn’t an air ball, and he still managed to get a single point out of it. It’s better than nothing.
