In a bombshell of breaking news for the Notre Dame football program and its fans, the University has confirmed that Everett Golson, the third-year Sophomore Quarterback who led the Irish to an undefeated 2012 regular season and a trip to the BCS National Championship game, is no longer enrolled at the school and as a result, has been removed as a member of the football team.
While the details are hazy at the moment, the initial rumors floating around (and they are just that), is that the basis of this shocking development is academics related.
To make matters worse, this all comes on the heels of 5-star Quarterback recruit Gunner Kiel transferring to the University of Cincinnati 6 weeks ago, due to the idea of sitting behind Golson in the immediate future.
This is a devastating hit to a program that has had their fair share of being on the wrong end of off-field controversy as of late. While the on-field success last year was one game short of perfect, the last calendar year has also brought negative light to the program in the form of key players being suspended, the Manti Te’o fiasco, rumors of Coach Brian Kelly bolting for the NFL, and now this. While they have an abundant 2013 roster, a top-tier recruiting class on the way in, and an experienced plan B at quarterback in Senior Tommy Rees, there is no way of lessening the unfavorable impact this will have on their 2013 season and beyond. Irish eyes are not smiling tonight.
