Sergio Garcia and Tiger woods have been in a bit of a spat over the past couple weeks starting at the Players Championship at Sawgrass, and it looks like it isn’t going to end anytime soon. Sergio Garcia has done a great job of putting his foot in his own mouth in the latest layer of the saga.
Sergio was attending the European Tour’s gala players’ awards dinner when he fielded a question from Golf Channel’s Steve Sands. According to the Guardian, Steve asked Sergio is he would have Tiger Woods over for dinner one night during the upcoming US Open. “We will have him round every night,” García said. “We will serve fried chicken.”
Sergio did not apologize immediately for the remark which many observe as being racist, but he did release a statement shortly after through the European Tour:
“I apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players’ Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.”
Joking or not, there is no excuse for a statement like that. If you are thinking to yourself that this story seems familiar maybe the below video will jolt your memory.
