Whatever you thought of the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fight, the spectacle of it all was downright amazing. Rarely, if ever, does the world stop for anything.
Especially for a sport like boxing where it has been on its last leg for longer than I have even been alive. Has the barbaric nature made it lose popularity? Maybe the archaic culture surrounding it all. It probably doesn’t help that one sportsbook in Las Vegas didn’t think the validity of the fight was all that sound.
It even surprised Mayweather that he wasn’t allowed to put a bet in on himself.
“They didn’t let me bet $400,000. Earlier today, I went to go bet $400,000 and they didn’t let me bet at a casino that I went to because they said I was the promoter,” said Mayweather after the fight. “They thought the fight was going to be set up. I’m not going to set up a fight for $400,000 when I’m making over $300 million.”
If you’re worried that Mayweather didn’t have a chance to make as much money as possible, then you’ll be happy with the outcome of this saga.
“I gave my friend $400,000 to go bet, they would only let him bet $87,000,” Mayweather said.
For all the bluster that surrounded the fight, the fact that this bet wasn’t allowed initially may be the most peculiar note from an already odd weekend.
