Remakes, reboots and sequels are much-criticized trends in Hollywood these days, and, in most cases, rightfully so. Still, there are some productions that were so undeniably awful the first time around, that fans would welcome a re-do with open arms — as long as hope exists of giving the subject its proper due. Godzilla is one of those things.
By this point, Roland Emmerich’s laughably bad Godzilla (1998) has pretty much been erased from the collective conscience. And, if there were any lingering reminders of it, they’ll likely be entirely swept away by the upcoming Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla (see, they want you to forget the 1998 American original so much, they didn’t even bother coming up with a different title — this is going to be the real Godzilla movie).
The highly anticipated trailer released today, and the movie looks very promising. The devastation looks to be of biblical proportions, and the production is supported with a first-rate cast, including Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. Godzilla opens in theaters May 16th, 2014.
