Head coach Jim Harbaugh just led the Michigan Wolverines to the program’s first national title in over two decades, but it sounds like the contract negotiations between Harbaugh and Michigan to try to keep him in Ann Arbor have hit a snag.

According to a report from prominent Michigan Wolverines insider and author John U. Bacon, the contract negotiations between Jim Harbaugh and Michigan are “at an impasse,” though the issue is not about money.

“The Harbaugh-Michigan negotiations are at an impasse, at least for now. It isn’t money – plenty there – but the clauses: what should be covered by immunity (e.g. cheeseburgers, etc.), and what not? Therein lies the rub. Stay tuned,” Bacon wrote in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, this is a significant development from the Michigan perspective and it comes as Harbaugh wrapped up his first interview with an NFL team this cycle when he met with the Los Angeles Chargers regarding their head coaching vacancy on Monday.

Harbaugh is widely considered one of the most sought-after candidates for NFL teams in need of a head coach. We’ll have to see if he does end up leaving Michigan to return to the NFL or if he and Michigan can come to terms on a contract extension.

But for now, it sounds like the NFL might be the most likely landing spot for Harbaugh – at least according to Bacon.
