In a recent development, musician Drake has signed on to be a “global ambassador” for the Toronto Raptors, which means he’ll be an executive for the team. But it feels like it’ll be more than that. Given Aubrey Drake Graham’s stature, he’ll be more of a figurehead, and most likely someone to lure in star players.
The move should solid for the Raptors, who are in desperate need of a little panache. The signing, plus the coming announcement of the 2016 All-Star Game in Toronto should be a good start. On the other hand, this could just be theatrics, and an attempt for Drake to be the next Jay-Z.
The Toronto born rapper is a “Raptors fan to death,” and should be able to throw himself full force into the situation. According to the Toronto Star:
The nuptials will start Monday with an announcement that Drake is partnering with the Raptors as they accept the 2016 NBA All-Star Game.
He’ll be drafted in as a non-official host of festivities. An actual MC, as well as a figurative one.
The hip-hop star will also launch a clothing line in conjunction with the team. Most intriguingly, he is being asked to consult on a complete redesign of the club’s image to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the franchise in the 2014-15 season.
According to sources at MLSE, everything about the team is on the table . . . aside from the name. Give up your Huskies dreams. MLSE and Drake are sticking with dinosaurs.
Going forward, this will be more than a business arrangement.
So, put simply, it should be interesting to see how this works out moving forward.
