You probably already know the story of Jason McElwain, as he became a viral sensation on the Internet a handful of years ago. McElwain, a former Autistic student at Greece Athena high school in Rochester, NY, was a beloved team manager for his high school’s basketball team.
During Greece Athena’s final home game during McElwain’s senior year, they let Jason suit up and subbed him into the game with just over four minutes left to go in the fourth quarter. After missing his first few shots, McElwain then did the unthinkable- he dropped 20 points and hit six three-pointers (a school record) in what was his first and last varsity appearance. At the game’s final buzzer, the crowd of Greece Athena students rushed the court and raised McElwain into national celebrity.
Flash forward seven years and one ESPY Award for Best Sports Moment later, McElwain is set to have his #52 jersey retired by Greece Athena. Only one other player in the school’s history has had his number retired, former Syracuse and NBA player John Wallace.
I’d say it’s a pretty fitting ending to an unbelievable story.
