The New York Giants have been linked to several quarterbacks throughout the pre-draft process in anticipation of the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. But despite these rumors, current starting quarterback Daniel Jones appears to be focused on himself ahead of the 2024-25 season.
New York has the No. 6 pick in the upcoming draft, which likely puts the team slightly out of the range of potentially selecting some of the top projected quarterbacks in the draft class like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels.
However, the team has shown quite a bit of interest in both Michael Penix Jr. and J.J. McCarthy, meeting with both before the draft to see how either could potentially fit into the team’s long-term plans.
If the Giants did select either Penix Jr. or McCarthy, this would obviously put Daniel Jones’ future with the team into question. Jones addressed these pre-draft rumors on Monday, saying that he is solely focused on himself heading into the NFL Draft.
“It’s a competitive league, so the best way to handle that I think is to focus on what I’m doing,” Jones said via Giants team reporter Dan Salomone. “Focus on myself and making sure that I’m, one, healthy, and then ready to play good football. So that’s what I can control. That’s what I can do to help myself and the team.
“I think you can get into trouble when you try to think too much about some of those things and how it all works out. … I’m just focused on what I’m doing, and that’s my rehab, getting healthy, spending time with the guys, and making sure we’re getting on the same page, and having the best spring we can.”
It’s probably the best approach for Jones to approach things this way. While the Giants’ rumored interest in the NFL Draft is certainly a concern for him, it is also a factor that is simply out of his control.
Jones is of course coming off a season where he unfortunately suffered a torn ACL midway through the season. So getting healthy regardless of the situation he finds himself in this fall is certainly important for him.
