The Chicago Bears officially decided to part ways with former starting quarterback Justin Fields over the weekend. And even though he could tell it was probably going to happen, Bears tight end Cole Kmet was not happy about it.

Cole Kmet is a close friend of Justin Fields. So when he got a call from head coach Matt Eberflus before going out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago, he called it “really upsetting” and decided not to go out to celebrate with his friends, after all.

“I was planning to hit the city and go out, but then I got a call from Flus and the people with the Bears, and decided to stay in after the news with Justin,” Kmet said on the CHGO Bears podcast according to Pro Football Talk. “Obviously, really upsetting that it came to that, and where it was at that moment, but you kind of felt like the writing was on the wall with that.”

Even though it wasn’t what he wanted to happen, he appreciated Eberflus and the Bears for breaking the news to him personally.

“I don’t expect them to call me for that kind of thing, but it’s always nice when they do reach out,” Kmet said. “I think that’s a classy move by them to let guys who have been with Justin and are close with Justin let them know about the decision and why they made the decision. So I’m definitely grateful that they do that, and it’s not something they have to do, by any means.”

Kmet is excited about the future with the Bears, but he’s not necessarily happy that Fields won’t be a part of it.
