After news broke yesterday that Steven Stamkos would not be able to compete in the Sochi Olympics because of his broken leg, it was announced today that one of Stamkos’ Lightning teammates, Martin St. Louis, would replace his spot on the roster.
Many thought that the 38-year old St. Louis shouldn’t have been snubbed by Team Canada in the first place and, despite his age, they may have a point. St. Louis, who has 25 goals this season and the most points of any NHL player since the 2010 Olympic Games, has proven that he still can consistently produce at an elite level.
In addition, a big fuss was made about Steve Yzerman – Executive Director of Team Canada and VP/GM of Marty’s Lightning – leaving the veteran winger off his roster the first time around. That only would have been amplified if Yzerman left him off TWICE, which could have factored into why St. Louis will be heading to Sochi after all.
Regardless, it’s a well-deserved nod for Marty.
