During Monday’s matinee between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning, Steven Stamkos left the ice on a stretcher after crashing his right leg into the goal post. Following the collision, he tried to get up and skate away, but immediately fell back down to the ice and squirmed in pain. He was taken to the hospital for X-Rays and TSN has reported that he suffered a broken tibia on the play and will require surgery.

This couldn’t possibly have come at a worse time for Stamkos. His team is first in the Eastern Conference, he currently leads the NHL in points and goals, and the Winter Olympics are right around the corner. He didn’t make Canada’s roster in 2010, but he was pretty much guaranteed a spot in Sochi. Hopefully he’ll recover in time to help Canada defend their title.
