The Washington State University Cougars are 5-5 and one win away from becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2003. That one win could happen as early as this coming Saturday against the Utah Utes, who just lost their starting quarterback, Travis Wilson, to a season-ending injury. With such a crucial win on the line, and it being the Senior Day home game, you’d think they’d have no problem filling the stands, right? Wrong.
WSU students get the entire Thanksgiving week off, and by Friday afternoon, everyone has hit the road back home. Of course, the one caveat to all that was back in the good ol’ pre-Pac-12 days, when the Saturday before T-Day was Apple Cup weekend. If the game were in Pullman, it’d be enough to entice students to stick around an extra day. Replace a hated rival with a 4-6 Utah team, and students will be looking to ditch town as soon as possible (trust me on that one). So, how do you attempt to quell the mass student exodus? Offer up insane raffle items as part of a fan appreciation promotion.
Students attending the final home game Saturday are eligible to win prizes ranging from a 32GB iPad Air, multiple Samsung flat panel TVs, Beats by Dr. Dre products, a $500 Alaska Airlines credit, insane gift certificate amounts to local restaurants, top-dollar seats to future sporting events, and a voice mail from head coach Mike Leach.
