The WNBA has no shortage of ongoing debates and cultural issues surrounding the growing league. From the Indiana Fever with Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, and the ongoing discussions about trans athletes playing in women’s sports, to recent announcements from ex-NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White pledging to join the upcoming WNBA draft in April 2027. There has been an online firestorm over the past month, debating what a woman is, and who exactly is welcome to play in the WNBA.
The backlash has turned very divisive, with players and media members openly turning on Fever stars Clark and Cunningham, who, to their credit, have stated they support and have no issues with trans athletes or people. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has faced criticism from conservatives for how she has handled the issue, or her lack of action. The WNBA recently convened a task force to look into the issue of trans athletes in the WNBA, and the league task force concluded: ‘There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.’
The issue is still a raging debate, and now many popular influencers, media members, and online personalities have been calling for Engelbert to be fired for her lack of decisiveness on the issue:

WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert
There’s one person who sits at the top of the WNBA who’s responsible for the product we see that’s filled with thuggery, horrible officiating, bruising/overly physical play and a bunch of woke decision-making.
SHOULD SHE BE FIRED?? pic.twitter.com/hesSMZC7Fx

Any quick cursory search of X and you will easily be able to find hundreds more posts just like these above. Sophie Cunningham herself recently admitted that she would like to see a new WNBA commissioner as well. But other WNBA stars such as Lynx star Napheesa Collier and four-time MVP A’ja Wilson have also spoken out about Engelbert’s job abilities in the past as well. However, Collier and Wilson have not gone as far as to call for her removal from the job.
Engelbert recently spoke out in Dallas last week and denounced those that she claims are trying to “sow divisiveness” in the WNBA based on these culture issues and mainly the topic of transgender athletes:
“We’re being the center of political football for people who have never watched the WNBA, never have written about the WNBA or reported on the WNBA. People are trying to use the league to sow divisiveness. There’s always going to be haters out there and we denounce it. The vitriol has got to stop against our players. There’s always going to be haters out there and we denounce it. But that’s what happens when you have made it as a legitimate sports media and entertainment product.”
It remains to be seen where things will go from here, but the online cultural issues and the WNBA are only heating up, with no clear end in sight.
