Prior to the start of the Monday Night Football game (at 5:19pm pst) with the San Francisco 49ers and the Pittsburgh Steelers there was quite the unexpected power outage. It took about 10 minutes for the power to be turned on, but immediately thoughts went back to the massive earthquake which struck Candlestick Park before the start of Game 3 of the 1989 World Series featuring the Giants and the Oakland A’s. No earthquake was involved here, but it was still a confusing situation, nonetheless. It was confirmed that a transformer had exploded very near the stadium which caused the outage. You can see the explosion below in the left hand corner of the screen.
Play was stopped again with 12:13 left in the second quarter when the lights went out again.
