In a very scary turn of events, a horse race at the Freehold Raceway ended badly when a pace car slid out on a slippery track and it caused a group of seven trotters to crash as well. The incident happened on Friday and five of the jockeys were transported to the hospital with unidentified injuries.
According to NJ.com:
The field of seven trotters was entering the first turn of Freehold’s half-mile track when video replays show the car sliding toward the infield. Only the lead horse cleared the car, which has large gates on either side that were folded back in after the race started. The second horse, driver and sulky hit crashed into the car, pulling the gate away from the body of the vehicle.
“I believe the horses are all okay. Five of the drivers have been transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center” in Neptune, said Freehold Raceway race secretary Karen Fagliarone, who did not know the conditions of the drivers.
