Following the start of the second half of a 2012 Olympic qualification match between Costa Rica and Canada, Costa Rica defender Marianne Ugaldedid, as many defenders do in her situation, delivered a soft pass back to goalkeeper Julieth Arias who was to clear the ball. Unfortunately things did not go as planned and Arias was left with egg on her face as well as one of the most embarrassing own goals we have ever seen.
The announcer summed it up well: “Well we’ve seen a few strange things in this tournament, but that probably takes the cake right there.”
