A good friend of mine named African Legend once said “athletes cannot handle the responsibility of twitter,” and I gave a smug chuckle. “Of course they can.” I said.
On Monday, a professional English soccer player named Marvin Morgan was booed off the field by his own fans when he was substituted during his team’s 2-1 loss. After the game, his thumbs went to work, tweeting:
“Like to thank the fans who booed me off the pitch. Where’s that going to get you! I hope you all die.”
There’s a running gag in the black community that goes as such: whenever there’s a news report about a serial killer, Darwin Award winner, or general idiot and they show a picture of a white dude, we all think “phew, I’m glad he wasn’t black.”
After hearing about this, I never gave it a thought to the player’s skin color but upon seeing a picture, my head dropped in disappointment. I wasn’t so sad that he was black (I was a little). No, I was disappointed that African Legend was right.
