Mark Zengerle of the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins scored a goal during the first period of Friday night’s win over the Oklahoma City Barons but, man, did he pay a heavy price for doing so.
Zengerle, a 25-year old center for the Red Wings’ minor league affiliate, was clobbered by OKC goaltender Richard Bachman during a breakaway just a few minutes into the game. The two players collided, sending Zengerle into barrel roll and hard into the endboards as his shot hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Fortunately, the Griffins center was fine and – in addition to this sweet highlight – he would go on to have a +4 night as the Griffins beat the Barons 5-2.
