The U.S. women’s national team made history in more ways than one by snapping a 16-year title drought and becoming the first to win three Women’s World Cups. And when you make sports history, you get a Sports Illustrated cover.
Except to commemorate this particularly special moment for the USWNT, Sports Illustrated decided to mix things up and honor each of the 23 members of the team with their own, one-of-a-kind cover. The magazine shot 25 covers in all, one for each member of the squad, one for coach Jill Ellis, and a group shot of some key players.
Members of USWNT (Sports Illustrated)
Forward Abby Wambach (Sports Illustrated).
Goalkeeper Hope Solo (Sports Illustrated).
Midfielder Megan Rapinoe (Sports Illustrated).
Forward Alex Morgan (Sports Illustrated).
Midfielder Carli Lloyd (Sports Illustrated).
Defender Julie Johnston (Sports Illustrated).
What a way to end, what will probably go down as, the best summer of their lives. Check out the rest of the covers here.
