On Saturday night, women’s soccer legend Megan Rapinoe played the final match of her professional soccer career OL Reign took on NJ/NY Gotham FC in the NWSL championship, but it certainly did not go the way she expected it to go. In fact, what happened was the “worst possible outcome” according to Rapinoe.

In just the sixth minute of the match, Megan Rapinoe went down with a non-contact injury that she feared was a torn Achilles, causing her to leave the field early and rather unceremoniously.

“Megan Rapinoe goes down with an injury less than three minutes into the NWSL Final in her last career game. She receives a standing ovation from Snapdragon Stadium,” Attacking Third said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

After the game, Rapinoe opened up about her injury a little bit.

“It felt like just a huge pop,” Rapinoe said about the injury during a press conference after the game, according to ESPN.

“The worst possible outcome,” Rapinoe continued. “I mean, just obviously devastating to go out in the final so early.”

It’s certainly not the way she wanted her final match to end, but she certainly made an impact on women’s soccer over the years.
