On March 17th, Tottenham Hotspur fans watched in frozen disbelief as Bolton Wanderers player Fabrice Muamba lay motionless following an on-field heart attack. Although various cheers erupted during the 20 minutes medics attended to him, much of the crowd was too stunned to make a sound. Muamba’s heart stopped beating for an astounding 78 minutes that day. Now, nearly seven months later, Muamba has made a full recovery — however, doctors ordered the 24-year-old midfielder to retire — and Thursday night he made an emotional return to the pitch where so many thousands of Hotspur fans had prayed for his life. Needless to say, the mood at White Hart Lane was quite different this time.
