Beer has never been sold inside Michigan Stadium, however for one special day, the nectar of the gods will be available for purchase and enjoyment. When the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings play the 2014 NHL Winter Classic at The Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan there will be glorious beer available for consumption. The University of Michigan’s governing board agreed to temporarily lift the venue’s ban on alcohol sales and consumption for the NHL-sponsored event, but officials have already shot down ideas that there would be alcohol at university-sponsored athletic events. To make the Canadian fans crossing the border for this historic game feel at home there will be Molson. There will also be Coors Light, as well as some local brews including Kalamazoo-based Bell’s Brewery’s Two-Hearted beer, Amber Ale and Winter White, plus some from Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewing Co. including their All Day IPA and Dirty Bastard brew. One of the beer providers, Jim Wanty, president of O&W Inc., a beer and wine distributor in the area, said his company will be trucking in 6,500 to 7,000 cases (24 cans per case) starting at 6 a.m. the morning of the game. However with temperatures in the teens at game time I’m not sure how many people will want a frosty brew.
