After missing 13 games with a back injury, Martin Brodeur returned to the New Jersey Devils net on Thursday to try and help his team climb back into the playoff picture. Just four minutes into the first period, Brodeur was credited with a goal, making him the all-time scoring leader amongst NHL goaltenders. It wasn’t exactly the most beautiful goal, in fact, he wasn’t even the last player to touch the puck. The Devils were called for a delayed penalty, so Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Dan Ellis made his way to the bench in order to give the Canes an extra attacker. Jordan Staal made a pass that ended up bouncing off the boards and into his own team’s net. Since Brodeur was the last Devil to touch the puck, he was credited with the goal, and now holds yet another NHL record.
