C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence

On Sunday afternoon, we got the first of what will likely be many showdowns between young star quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Stroud when the Jacksonville Jaguars took on the Houston Texans. But Lawrence admits that he wishes his team never had to worry about a player like Stroud.

During his postgame press conference on Saturday, Trevor Lawrence made it clear that he isn’t necessarily happy with the divisional rivalry that’s brewing between the Texans and the Jaguars for one simple reason: he doesn’t want teams in his division to be good.

“I want the teams in our division to be as bad as possible,” Lawrence said with a smile. “That’s how I see it. The way they’re playing, it’s exciting. And yes,  there’s going to be some – I’m sure – some great matchups down the road.”

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t impressed by what opposing quarterback C.J. Stroud has been accomplishing during his first season in the league.

“C.J.’s playing – he’s playing lights out,” Lawrence said. “He’s doing a great job. To be a rookie and to play how he is, I’ve got a lot of respect for him.  I know how hard it is. I’ve been in that position. He’s doing a great job, and it’s going to be fun for years to come, hopefully.”

Lawrence has been quite impressed by what Stroud has done as just a rookie, but he just wishes Stroud played for a team that the Jaguars didn’t have to face two times every regular season.

“But no, I mean, I wouldn’t prefer that. I’d prefer if the guys in our division didn’t have good quarterbacks. It’d be better for us,” Lawrence said. “But he’s doing a heck of a job, and just going to keep getting better. He’s still obviously young – a rookie. To be playing how he is now, it’s impressive. It’s impressive to watch, and it’s going to be fun.”

Lawrence may not like it, but it looks like this is going to be a fun matchup between these two young stars for years to come.
