The Denver Broncos still have not officially announced their decision on whether or not they intend to part ways with quarterback Russell Wilson. But during a recent press conference, it seems that Broncos head coach Sean Payton seemed to accidentally reveal the team’s decision on Wilson.
During his press conference at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday, Sean Payton accidentally referenced “this next one” when discussing the team’s situation at quarterback.
“I saw this humorous meme the other day where there’s a Broncos fan with a shirt on with like eight quarterback’s names crossed through them and he’s drinking the quarterback Kool-Aid,” Payton said according to Pro Football Talk. “Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it.”
Most assumed that the Broncos would be parting ways with Wilson after they benched him late in the season when the team was technically still in playoff contention, but no formal announcement has been made since then.
Wilson has since made it clear that he would like to remain with the team, but these comments from Payton seem to suggest that the team will move on from Wilson and go in a different direction at quarterback.
