Following his playing career, legendary quarterback John Elway served as the general manager and Executive VP of football operations for the Denver Broncos from 2011 to 2020. And while he did help lead the team to a Super Bowl title in 2015, he also made one pretty horrible mistake that has set the organization back.
During a recent appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast, John Elway admitted that selecting linebacker Bradley Chubb with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft over quarterback Josh Allen was “probably my biggest mistake of my GM days.”
“I know, he is [my type],” Elway said on the podcast according to SI.com. “Last year I played [golf] with him and I’m wondering, ‘How long is it going to take him to realize that I passed on him and took Bradley Chubb instead?’ It took him two and a half holes to bring it up. And I loved him, just didn’t work out. He was my type. That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days was not taking Josh.”
Elway retired from his executive position with the Broncos following the 2020 season, but it’s pretty clear that he will always regret passing on Allen in the draft.
